Антиоксидантный ферментативный комплекс тканей различных цветовых морф черноморского моллюска Mytilus galloprovincialis Lam. IBSS Repository
Гостюхина, О. Л.; Солдатов, А. А.; Головина, И. В.; Столбов, А. Я..

IBSS Repository
Шурова, Н. М.; Золотарёв, В. Н..

Mytilus Galloprovincialis. IBSS Repository
Поспелова, Н. В..

Bodin, Nathalie.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the seasonal variations of six biomarkers on Mytilus galloprovincialis, using comparison with physiological index and chemical contamination levels on two sites of  Mediterranean sea. The seasonal variations of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), DNA adducts, benzo(a)pyrene hydroxylase (BPH), heat-shock proteins (HSP), metallothioneins (MT) and multixeniobiotic proteins (MXR) were estimated over a two-year period, on mussels which were sampled in Carteau (original site) and La Fourcade (transplanted organisms). Carteau, an industrial site, presents higher contamination levels (HAP, PCB, heavy metals) than La Fourcade, an urban area. The PAH profiles underline a strong spatio-temporal variability of levels and sources of...

Haemocytic neoplasia in Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) in the Slovene Adriatic Sea ArchiMer
Gombac, Mitja; Sitar, Rosvita; Pogacnik, Milan; Arzul, Isabelle; Jencic, Vlasta.
The health status of cultured and wild Mediterranean mussels in the Slovene Sea has so far been unexplored. Initially, 1280 adult Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis), 960 from a shellfish farm and 320 from natural beds, were collected over a one-year period. Water temperature, oxygenation and salinity were measured at each sampling. Mussels were measured and weighted to calculate the condition index and microscopically examined for the presence of haemocytic neoplasia. Haemocytic neoplasia was detected in 14 mussels (1.1%) with a higher prevalence in cultured mussels. Neoplastic cells singularly infiltrated the connective tissue, in small foci or diffusely. Necrosis and multifocal atrophy of digestive tubules were noticed in mussels with...

Multiple biomarkers of pollution effects in caged mussels on the Greek coastline ArchiMer
Tsangaris, C.; Kormas, K.; Strogyloudi, E.; Hatzianestis, I.; Neofitou, C.; Andral, Bruno; Galgani, Francois.
A suite of biomarkers was measured in caged mussels at areas impacted by different anthropogenic activities along the Greek coastline to assess biological effects of environmental pollution. Mussels were caged at coastal sites in the vicinity of major cities, in areas influenced by major industries, agricultural practices and in islands away from known sources of pollution. Biomarkers indicative of neurotoxicity (acetylcholinesterase, AchE), oxidative stress (catalase, CAT), phase 11 biotransformation of xenobiotics (glutathione S-transferase, GST), metal exposure (metallothioneins, MTs) and protein synthesis (RNA:DNA ratio) were measured to assess effects of various types of pollutants. AchE activity proved to be the most responsive biomarker with...

The Mytilos project was carried during the last 3 years (2004-2006) in order to evaluate the level of chemical contamination along the coasts of the western basin of the Mediterranean Sea. Active mussel watch consisted of caged (12 weeks) Mytilus galloprovincialis at 123 stations along the Mediterranean coasts of Spain, France, Italy, North Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco. Results indicated total PAHs levels in the range 22-106 mu g/kg dry weight. All large towns or industrial areas from all countries of the basin were affected. Analysis of the origin of contamination demonstrated mainly a pyrolytic origin except in some areas such as Maddalena, Napoli, Alger, and Cornigliano (Genova). Statistical analysis of the PAHs accumulation data enabled the...

Modeling trace metal accumulation in the mediterranean mussel, mytilus galloprovincialis ArchiMer
Casas, Stellio; Cossa, Daniel; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Bacher, Cedric; Andral, Bruno.
Monitoring coastal contamination by trace metals pollution using mollusks bivalves as quantitative bioindicators is widely performed in many international biomonitoring programs. In this purpose, modeling metal dynamic in marine mussels is a reliable tool. It allows understanding the bioaccumulation process which results from the interactions between biological, chemical and environmental factors. To calibrate such a model, kinetic experiments on uptake and elimination were conducted on three Mediterranean sites chosen on the basis of their different nutritive and chemical characteristics.

Biogeographical Patterns of Endolithic Infestation in an Invasive and an Indigenous Intertidal Marine Ecosystem Engineer ArchiMer
Ndhlovu, Aldwin; Mcquaid, Christopher D.; Nicastro, Katy; Marquet, Nathalie; Gektidis, Marcos; Monaco, Cristian; Zardi, Gerardo.
By altering the phenotypic properties of their hosts, endolithic parasites can modulate the engineering processes of marine ecosystem engineers. Here, we assessed the biogeographical patterns of species assemblages, prevalence and impact of endolithic parasitism in two mussel species that act as important ecosystem engineers in the southern African intertidal habitat, Perna perna and Mytilus galloprovincialis. We conducted large-scale surveys across three biogeographic regions along the South African coast: the subtropical east coast, dominated by the indigenous mussel, P. perna, the warm temperate south coast, where this species coexists with the invasive Mediterranean mussel, M. galloprovincialis, and the cool temperate west coast dominated by M....

Influence of turbulence and turbidity on growth and survival of laboratory-reared bivalve larvae ArchiMer
Seaman, Matthias; His, Edouard; Keskin, Mehmet; Reins, Torsten.
Laboratory-reared larvae of mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis ) were incubated with and without sediment in a novel turbulence-producing machine. The sediments used were fine silt from the Gironde Estuary and from the German Wadden Sea. Larvae incubated in turbulence without sediment, and in suspended sediment concentrations similar to in situ conditions had growth rates which did not vary significantly from those of the controls. The growth rates of larvae incubated in 5 to 20 g/l of sediment were reduced by 20 to 50%. Survival was lower in larvae incubated with sediments than in turbulent and non-turbulent controls, but it was not correlated with sediment concentration. The results indicate that the mechanical effects of turbulence and turbidity on...

First record of Marteilia sp in mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis in Croatia ArchiMer
Zrncic, Snjevana; Le Roux, Frédérique; Oraic, Drazen; Sostaric, Branko; Berthe, Franck.
Marteiliosis is a disease of molluscs caused by Marteilia refringens in Europe and M. sydneyi in Australia. During routine examination of cultured mussels Mytilus galloprovinciallis in the northern Adriatic, the occurrence of Marteilia sp. was recorded with a prevalence of 5 %. This parasite was not detected in flat oysters reared in the same area. The affiliation of the detected parasite in M. galloprovinciallis was confirmed by in situ hybridization using a M. refringens probe, specific at the genus level. DNA of these infected mussels originating from the same area will be used to clarify the taxonomic position of this species within the genus Marteilia using a molecular approach.

Farmed bivalve loss due to seabream predation in the French Mediterranean Prevost Lagoon ArchiMer
Richard, Marion; Forget, Fabien; Mignucci, Alexandre; Mortreux, Serge; Le Gall, Patrik; Callier, Myriam; Weise, Am; Mckindsey, Cw; Bourjea, Jerome.
Bivalve predation by seabream has been observed worldwide and is a major concern for bivalve farmers. Farmed bivalve-seabream interactions must be better understood to ensure the sustainability of bivalve aquaculture. The objectives of this study were to characterize gilthead seabream Sparus aurata presence in a bivalve farm in Prevost Lagoon (Mediterranean Sea) using acoustic telemetry and to evaluate monthly losses of mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis and oysters Crassostrea gigas due to seabream predation over an 18 mo period inside the farm and at an unprotected experimental platform. Large (281 to 499 mm TL) seabream were more commonly detected in the bivalve farm than were small (200 to 280 mm TL) seabream. In contrast to small seabream, 90% of large...

Monitoring coastal contamination of trace metals using bivalve molluscs as quantitative bioindicators is widely used in many international monitoring programs. The bioaccumulation of metal within an organism results from the interaction between physiological (growth, loss of weight, absorption, accumulation), chemical (metal concentration, speciation, bioavailability) and environmental factors (temperature, SPM, chlorophyll). By utilizing the parameters above in this study, it appears that modeling metal dynamics in marine mussels is a reliable tool. The model allows understanding the bioaccumulation process which results from the interactions between biological, chemical and environmental factors. Cytotoxic and antibacterial properties of Mytilus galloprovincialis, Ostrea edulis and Crassostrea gigas (bivalve molluscs) hemolymph ArchiMer
Hubert, Florence; Van Der Knaap, Wil; Noel, Thierry; Roch, Philippe.
Mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) plasma contains cytotoxic activity against both vertebrate (erythrocytes and mouse tumour) and protozoan cells. Procaryotes (Escherichia coli and Vibrio alginolyticus) were not sensitive to the cytotoxicity. The activity was still present in dialyzed samples but was inhibited by heating at 45°C. Large individual variability which was not correlated with protein concentration and an increasing number of reactive specimens following injection, suggested that naive mussels were in various stages of immune response. Purification by anion exchange chromatography followed by gel filtration revealed a 320 kDa cytotoxic polymeric protein that acts through a polymerization process after binding onto target cell membranes as...

A comparison of growth and biochemical composition of Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lmk.) and Mytilus edulis (L.) on the West coast of Cotentin, Normandy, France 1999-2000 ArchiMer
Kopp, Joel; Cornette, Florence; Simonne, Charlotte.
The blue mussel, Mytilus edulis has been reared along the Normandy coast line since the 1960s. The gonadal cycle of this mussel species shows a sharp decrease in meat quality during the winter period after spawning. This decline in meat quality is so severe that sales have to be suspended from December to July. Another species of mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis, which is reared in the lagoons along the French shore of the Mediterranean Sea has a different spawning cycle. An experiment was undertaken to study the meat quality of M. Galloprovincialis throughout the year after the spat were transferred from the Mediterranean Sea to the Normandy coast. This species showed an immediate adaptation to the gonadal cycle of M. edulis. Despite suggestions from...
